On 1 July 2014, the European Union published on the Official Journal the amendment to the Appendix A of Annex II to Directive 2009/48/EC on the safety of toys to permit the use of nickel in toy components which are intended to conduct an electric current.
Member States shall adopt and publish, by 1 July 2015 at the latest, the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with this Directive. The provision will be applicable from 1 July 2015.
Nickel is classified as carcinogenic category 2, but it is also used in toys for its resistance to corrosion and its high electrical conductivity.
Appendix A of Annex II to Directive 2009/48/EC is replaced by the following:
